Charles William Carrigan passed away peacefully on January 6, 2025, two weeks shy of his 90th birthday. He was born in Worcester Massachusetts on January 20, 1935, the son of Charles and Margaret Carrigan, the youngest of two other siblings, Anne Marie and Patricia Rose.

Charlie graduated from St. John’s High School (1953) and Worcester Junior College (1955) and received a B.A. in accounting from Northeastern University in Boston (1964). He then moved to San Francisco where he met his future wife, Linda Brouwer. After just one date, they were married on December 17, 1966. They raised their two children, Matthew and Laura, in Orinda, California until the family moved to Wellesley, Massachusetts in 1979.

Charlie’s business career spanned almost 70 years. In 1971 he passed his CPA exam and became a lifelong member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accounts. His interest in forensic accounting became his professional passion and in 1980 he struck out to establish his own firm, Carrigan Associates. The highlight of his career was the 15 year period he worked with the historic insurance house Lloyds of London, which involved frequent prolonged trips to the UK. He relished his time there and cherished the memories of it.

Charlie loved to travel, from car camping in national parks, to luxury hotels, to grand passenger ships. He traveled extensively with his family throughout the US, Europe, and Asia.

He was a devoted, member of the Catholic Church, from his time as an altar boy at St. Bernard’s Church in Worcester to his treasured years as a communicant at Corpus Christi Church in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Charlie lived in York, Maine from 1989 to 2003 and then moved to Portsmouth, New Hampshire where he remained until 2022. He was a familiar face and beloved regular at many dining establishments around the Seacoast. In later years, he enjoyed the camaraderie of the Dull Men’s Club at the Senior Center and could regularly be found sitting in the sun in Market Square in downtown Portsmouth with a smile for everyone and a can of his favorite Sam Adam’s NA beer.

Charlie is survived by his son Matthew Carrigan and his wife, Hilary Black, of Washington, D.C.; daughter, Laura Carrigan, and her partner, Bob Withington, of Cape Neddick, Maine; and his former wife, Linda Brouwer Carrigan, of York, Maine.

A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday January 17 at Corpus Christi Parish in Portsmouth.
