I am very pleased to announce that the 35th annual AAPA Convention, Show and Sale will once again be held just North of Cincinnati at our host hotel, The Embassy Suites in Blue Ash, Ohio. The convention dates will be Thursday, April 30th through Sunday, May 3rd and the hotel has blocked suites for our event at a rate of $97.00 per night. This special rate, which includes an amazing cooked to order breakfast and a managers reception in the evening, is guaranteed through March 28th. Please make your reservations early by calling the hotel at 513-733-8900 and mentioning you are coming in for the AAPA convention.
I am also very excited that the Contemporary Art Pottery Collectors Association, (CAPCA), will be joining us for this years convention. CAPCA is the largest organization devoted to collecting contemporary art pottery.
The convention events include a chartered bus tour, welcome reception, four impressive seminars, a pottery auction and the AAPA Show and Sale. The Thursday guided tour focuses on the magnificent Rookwood tile installations throughout Cincinnati. The first stop will be the Netherlands Plaza Hotel (1931), a National Historical Landmark, filled with a multi-story Rookwood fountain with a pair of matching seahorses, beautiful tiles, ceiling murals and more. We will then proceed on a guided four block walking tour of the tile sites downtown, which will include many building facades from the early 1900’s. The bus will then take us to the Union Terminal, (1933), called one of the most iconic Art Deco masterpieces in the US and now house the Cincinnati Museum Center. The terminal is home to massive mosaic murals by Winold Reiss, as well as the famous ice cream parlor, formally a tea room, which is entirely encased in Rookwood tile. There are many choices for lunch at the terminal, such as Cincinnati Chili and if you like dessert you must try the Rookwood Ice Cream Parlor. From there we will proceed to the Hughes Center High School for a guided walking tour. The school has ten Rookwood tile installations, plus terra cotta mosaics, fabulous fountains and many other goodies.
The AAPA would like to invite everyone to join us Thursday evening at the hotel for a complimentary welcome reception. This is a great place to see old friends, meet new ones and talk about pottery! During the reception we will be giving away many door prizes, consisting of pottery books and gift certificates to be used to purchase pottery at the show and sale.
For those of you who wish to exhibit at our show and sale the dealer packet has been sent to you separately in an email. If you did not receive your dealer packet and would like to exhibit, or have any questions regarding the show and sale, please contact our show managers, Don Gill and Patti Bourgeois at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Once again Peter Gehres of Belhorn Auctions has graciously volunteered to be our guest auctioneer. The auction will be held both online through Proxibid and live at the Embassy Suites Hotel. The preview begins at 2:30 PM on Friday May 1st followed by the auction which begins at 4:00 PM. This auction is our main fundraiser for the year and I am asking you all to please consign to the sale. We also are in need of pottery donations to the auction, as 100% of that sale goes directly to the AAPA. So please donate and/or consign whatever you can. If you have any questions regarding the auction, donating or consigning please contact Peter Gehres or myself. And as always we need volunteers for the many events during the convention. If you can volunteer please complete the volunteer activities section at the end of the registration form or contact Patti Bourgeois or myself.
Thank you very much for supporting the AAPA. If you have any questions or suggestions, please do not hesitate to call or email me. I hope to see you all at the 2015 AAPA Convention!
Best regards, Arnie Small,
President, American Art Pottery Association
